Someone walks in holding a printout of a hair patch from one shop and a photo of a wig from another, and they ask me which one they actually need. It’s one of the most common questions we get at the clinic, and the honest answer is that a hair patch and a wig solve two different problems. Once you see the difference, the choice usually makes itself.
Both options use real, natural human hair. Both are completely non surgical, with nothing cut and nothing implanted. But a hair patch and a full wig are built for different amounts of hair loss, and they behave very differently once you’re wearing them day to day. Let’s go through what each one is actually for.
What a hair patch is built for
A hair patch is made for partial hair loss, the kind you see at the crown, the front hairline, or in patchy areas from alopecia. The patch covers only the affected area and is custom matched to your remaining hair so it blends in rather than replacing it. Because your own hair is still doing most of the work around the edges, the patch only needs to do part of the job.
This is why a hair patch fitting is usually quick and why upkeep stays simple. You’re not managing an entire head of hair, just the section that needed help.
What a full wig is built for
A wig covers the whole scalp, which makes it the right call when there’s little or no natural hair left to blend with, after years of progressive balding, or for clients going through chemotherapy where hair loss is sudden and complete. Because a wig doesn’t depend on existing hair, it gives you complete control over the look from scratch, length, texture, even colour, if you want a change.
A patch finishes a picture that’s mostly already there. A wig paints the whole picture. Neither one is better, they’re just answering different questions.

Side by side
So which one is right for you?
Here’s a simple way to think about it. If people would have a hard time guessing where your real hair ends and the patch begins, you probably have enough natural hair left for a patch. If there’s little hair left to anchor anything to, a wig gives you a complete, natural finish without that limitation.
- Choose a hair patch if your hair loss is localised, you want the fastest fix, or you’re easing into wearing a hair system for the first time.
- Choose a full wig if your hair loss covers most or all of your scalp, you want the freedom to change your look, or you’re recovering from a medical condition like chemotherapy.
The Quick Version
- Both use real human hair and involve no surgery.
- A patch covers part of the scalp, a wig covers all of it.
- Patches blend with the hair you still have, wigs replace the need for it.
- The right pick depends on how much natural hair you still have, not preference alone.
What happens at your consultation
We start by looking at exactly how much hair you have left and where. From there it’s usually obvious whether a patch or a wig fits your situation better, and we’ll tell you honestly even if it’s not the option you walked in expecting. You can see and feel both before deciding anything. We also carry full ranges for men’s wigs and women’s wigs if a wig turns out to be the better fit.
Still not sure which one fits?
